COACHING FOR INDIVIDUALS

Partnering for personal development

Understory Coaching follows the coaching philosophy and competencies defined by the International Coach Federation (ICF), which views coaching as a creative process that inspires the client to maximize his or her personal and professional potential. If you are an individual who wishes to work with a certified leadership coach, but do not have access to this resource through your employing organization, we can help.

How coaching can benefit you

Clarify and prioritize goals

You have an idea of what’s not working; we’ll help you articulate clear, realistic, and genuinely energizing goals

Deepen self-awareness

Our curiosity about what makes you tick helps you pay attention to thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that may have become invisible drivers of your choices

Pressure-test and expand thinking

Without judgment, we question and challenge your assumptions to help you validate or improve initial ideas

An accountability partner

You've declared your goals; we give you the permission to sustain focus on them when life's distractions intrude

A safe space to be vulnerable

We get that change is risky and hard; without judgment, we offer room to figure out what you’re ready to do differently, why it matters, and how to take meaningful but manageable steps forward

Two coaching paths for growth

One-on-one Coaching

Places efficient and effective focus on the specific development objectives of each leader receiving coaching

  • The focus is on this leader’s individual development goals, featuring aligned intent among the leader, his/her/their key organizational stakeholders, and the coach

  • We explore the leader’s development goals in partnership with key stakeholders; conduct any assessments that might aid understanding; gain organizational support for a targeted development action plan; meet regularly to discuss progress, obstacles, and next steps; and close the engagement with a plan for ongoing development

Group Coaching

Provides a rich, multi-dimensional learning experience for individuals while exploring a theme impacting the organization such as leading through times of change or managing one’s own stress while leading the business

  • In a safe space created by an experienced coach, a small group of peers learn from each other’s diverse perspectives, while honing their own coaching skills

  • A group of 5-8 people committed to their own development and to the group meet at defined intervals over several months; group members verbally share their development goals, challenges, and successes, and receive coaching from their group mates, facilitated by the group coach

VP, STRATEGY IN A FORTUNE 500 CORPORATION

“The coaching with Jodi was an intense experience that has positively changed my day to day business presence and influence in ways I would not have imagined prior to the engagement. She was able to drive me to a point where I become ‘tense’ and thereby finally to do what is ‘less natural.’ Jodi rapidly understood that I’m learning faster and behave differently when I’m stretched. When stretching me, Jodi has a large toolbox of resources that made it easy for me to understand and learn. She is a very inspiring person who is great to talk to and to share life stories and experiences.”

“People had given me feedback but I didn’t understand it so I wasn’t changing my behavior. Jodi helped me make those connections so I can see it myself now. I still mess up sometimes, but now I can see it. I catch myself and make the change in the moment. Sometimes I’ve come onto coaching calls with Jodi and just vented for the first 15 minutes about what wasn’t going well. She listened and summarized what I’d said, and asked if we should focus on a couple of specific issues. She’s helped me turn my jumble of thoughts into concrete things I can work on.”
